Check AI Media with Gemini
Google has made it simple to verify whether an image, video, or audio clip was created or edited with its AI tools. Just ask Gemini, and it will check for a special invisible watermark called SynthID.
SynthID is Google’s hidden digital mark that gets added to content made with its AI models (like images from Imagen, videos from Veo, or audio). The mark is invisible to people but detectable by Google’s tools. In the Gemini app, anyone can now upload a file and ask a straightforward question like “Is this AI generated?” to see if Google’s AI was involved. This helps people browse the web with more confidence about what’s real and what’s synthetic. How It Works Open the Gemini app or go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
Attach one image, video, or audio file.
Ask something like “Is this AI generated?” or “Was this made with Google AI?”
Gemini scans the file for the SynthID watermark and tells you the result. For videos, it can even point out specific parts where the mark appears. The process is quick and works inside the normal chat. There’s also a separate public website (SynthID Detector) that can check content from Google and some partner companies.
A positive result means all or part of the file was created or edited with Google AI.
A negative result only means no Google SynthID was found — the content could still come from other AI tools.
You can check one file at a time, with size limits (generally up to 100 MB; videos are shorter).
This is one of several ways Google is trying to increase transparency around AI-generated media.
It’s a useful everyday tool for spotting Google-made AI content without needing special software. Just upload and ask.
